Brisbane: Flatline at Slipstream Festival of Time-based art

I am performing at Slipstream/Festival of Time-based art in Brisbane next week with Flatline.

13-15 August, Sue Benner Theatre. More info: Drawn In

DRAWN IN is a performance installation project that happens over a week – it involves three solo practitioners in distinct artforms (music, visual art and dance) transforming a space gradually through experimentation, performance and constant creation.

The work explores the boundaries between form, space and performance.  Each day, the three artists converge to develop rules that bind them together to create harmonious art, driven by responding in the moment to each other.

2 new tracks: 'Expulsion' & 'Twilight of a new age'

These were both created for Flatline (dance and live visual art): 'Expulsion' (raw vocal source material by Jane Williamson) for their performance at the Beams Festival Sydney, 2014; and 'Twilight of a new age' (raw vocal source material by Paris Favilla) for their performance at Parramatta Lanes Festival, 2014.

'Twilight of a new age' was created with the original performance space - a reverberant concrete multistorey carpark - in mind:

Video: Performance during Hai Art Residency (Hailuoto, Finland)

In July and August this year I studied and performed in the Netherlands (Jacob TV), Germany (Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music) and Finland (Antye Greie-Ripatti, Hai Art). The week and a half I was in Finland was mainly spent on the island of Hailuoto (pop. 989), ten hours by train north of Helsinki.

Setting up for a performance in Darmstadt with Thomas Wagensommerer (AT), Denise Frey (DE), and Dennis Sobolev (IL):

The Hai Art media lab on Hailuoto is 15,172 km in a straight line from my front door in Melbourne. The area around Hailuoto and Oulu on the mainland is an interesting place with dynamic geography. It's close to the Arctic Circle, with perpetual day during summer, and perpetual night along with an ice road across the sea during winter. The island is rising out of the sea by a centimetre each year, revealing new land, and one resident told me of noticeable changes to the mainland coastline over her lifetime.

Hailuoto is known as a destination for both bird watching and hunting. I arrived during hunting season, and initially mistook the people in camouflage for soldiers. Rifle shots could be heard through the night, and made some (mostly remote) areas of the island unsafe to visit.

Hai Art has commissioned some great art on the island, including a weather-responsive sound installation in the old weather observatory, bicycles fitted with GPS and speakers that play site-specific audio as you ride, and the 'Organum' - a concrete acoustic sculpture. My favourite was the 'Anchorhold', a remote, unlikely looking structure designed for intimate discussion:

My residency involved study with Antye Greie-Ripatti, and a performance in the Organum using field recordings I had made during my time on the island. Here is a video documenting the preparation of the performance, with some additional audio from the performance itself:

Photos from "Sketch" development w/ Flatline, Apr-May 2014

Sketch, by Flatline, will premiere in September at Riverside theatres, Parramatta. Here are some photos from our latest development period at Blacktown Arts Centre. Dance, live visual art, live sound:

Sketch is the first full length work by Flatline; a new interdisciplinary collective that converges multiple art forms in new and exciting performance experiences. This triptych sees three dancers, a visual artist and composer transform the theatre into a hyper-sensorial world where these three mediums push and pull one another into new territory. The work converges old and new technologies to intercept lines, curves and colours with choreographic and sound scores. Flatline presents work that explores the spaces between art forms, bringing them closer to one another to a point where they are no longer distinguishable.

Chain Reactions audio and MAMU Sound Cupboard

Here is a recording of my set with Mark Pedersen and Evan Carr at the "Chain Reactions" gig at Conduit Arts, curated by Nat Grant. Evan was generating the sound, which I was processing, and Mark processed my sound in turn to ouput.

I was also recently involved in designing sound for an installation by Indija Mahjoeddin, for the Music Archive of Monash University. The source audio was taken from cassettes in the archive, including of South East Asian, East Asian, Jewish and European music, as well as scholarship talks.

Emulation 4: Recording and comparison to score

In the Emulation pieces, performers rehearse a pre-recorded "audio-score" instead of written notation, and attempt to perfectly recreate this audio track live, according to certain instructions.

In Emulation 4, pitch, timing and dynamic must be matched precisely to the score, with timbre being interpreted relative to the instrument.

Here is a demo recording by Paris Favilla, with a comparison of the performance of the first part to the score audio.

Monday, 18 November: Premiere of Emulation 4

My audio-score piece, Emulation 4 for solo wind instrument, will be premiered this Monday by saxophonist Paris Favilla at her graduation recital from Monash University.

I will also be performing in an improvisation for saxophone and live electronics, using TouchOSC for Android and a MIDI controller with Max/MSP to process the saxophone live.

Emulation 4 is the fourth of my pieces utilising an audio score, whereby the performers attempt to emulate pre-composed audio as they hear it through headphones.

The performer should study and practice the audio-score in the same way they would practice any traditional score; it is meant to be learned rather than reacted to, and it can (and should) be listened to through headphones on stage.

The goal is to recreate exactly the pitch, timing, dynamic, and relative timbre of the audio-score in performance.

Saturday, Nov 2: Performance at Eurisko Melbourne

I am one of many Melbourne musicians performing at DIY event Eurisko this weekend. I will be building on my previous explorations of the Interactive Swarm Space application by playing the swarm with a MIDI keyboard.

Eurisko is a community celebration of discovering by doing. Join a passionate collaboration of makers, crafters, hackers, tinkerers, players, sustainability experts and many others who've come to Melbourne for this iconic event.

My set is at 3pm on Saturday. $10 ticket (online) for entry into the whole event, both Saturday and Sunday.
